Lowco HS Softball Roundup: March 7-10

A promising Bluffton team opened its season, Hilton Head High swept a pair from Thomas Heyward, and Beaufort High’s Kylie Rast put on a show against John Paul II to highlight the high school softball action around the Lowco last week. Here’s our Lowco softball roundup.

HSSB: Rast shuts down Dolphins, leads Eagles’ hit parade

Kylie Rast struck out 10 batters in a complete game and went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs, and four runs in the leadoff spot to set the tone for Beaufort High softball in a 23-4 road win over Battery Creek on Monday at Whale Branch.

HSSB: Seahawks split, Eagles struggle at Battle of the Bases

Hilton Head High softball finished 2-2 over the weekend to begin the 2022 season, falling to Wando and Summerville 15-6 and 16-0 on Friday before rebounding Saturday to defeat Beaufort High and Goose Creek 12-0 and 16-9 at the Battle of the Bases tournament at Wescott Park in North Charleston.

Throughout a high school sports season, there are special moments that stick with you as a journalist. The championship moments come to mind first, like Skylar Smith’s game-winning 3-pointer for Hilton Head Christian Academy or Tyler Haley’s clutch pass to McLeod Reichel to lead Beaufort High to a Lower State title. But the most rewarding moment of my work is seeing the culmination of dreams years in the making: the day where a lofty goal becomes an achieved reality.

SB: Bilenski’s gem gives Yeske first win at USCB

Sierra Bilinski spun a complete-game shutout in USCB softball’s season opener, and the Sand Sharks hit three home runs in Codee Yeske’s head coaching debut Tuesday for a doubleheader split with NCAA Division II Anderson at Richard Gray Sports Complex. The Sand Sharks took the opener 2-0 behind Bilinski’s gem, but the Trojans bounced back to win the nightcap 10-5. 

Lowco athletes sign letters of intent to play at next level

The culmination of a longtime dream came true for student-athletes across the country on Wednesday, the first day high school seniors in sports other than football could sign letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level next school year.
