WES’s WISDOM: Catching up on more Lowco stars playing on Saturdays

Last week, I highlighted a couple of our former Lowco stars that are shining at the college football level. But I left off many other hard-working student-athletes who also deserved a shoutout. It’s been incredible to see the number of players we send off each year, and they are all worthy of high recognition. Let’s take a look at some more area players that have made their names known on Saturday afternoons.

WES’s WISDOM: Beating the COVID-19 pandemic is going to be a team effort

As we reached a much-anticipated summer here in 2021, it looked like the end of the COVID-19 pandemic was in sight. Local case numbers started to significantly dip, and vaccines began rolling out for the general public. That was the first time I felt like we could have a normal fall free of worries about the virus that has haunted us for more than 18 months.

WES’s WISDOM: Delaney’s determination proves you can get anywhere from here

On March 23, 2020, it looked like Dee Delaney’s NFL dreams were slipping away. He had just been released by Washington, and the coronavirus pandemic was in full swing. With so much uncertainty and a lack of success in his first two years out of college, another opportunity seemed unlikely. Just 18 months later, the Lowco product will take to Raymond James Stadium to play his first game for the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

WES’s WISDOM: Sampson’s golf marathon with a mission still going strong

In 2009, Billy Sampson set foot on the first tee of Old Tabby Golf Links, preparing for what would be a memorable day ahead. After taking a moment to consider the lives he was about to touch, he teed up his ball and began the first of 114 holes: all in an effort to help the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our nation.

WES’s WISDOM: Five takeaways from the opening week of high school football

After a long summer in anticipation of kickoff, the first week of the 2021 football season was certainly worth the wait. We were treated to a large helping of highlight-reel plays and thrilling finishes with several Lowco teams making a strong statement to begin the new year.

WES’s WISDOM: CJ Cummings took the road less traveled … all the way to Tokyo

When we first heard CJ Cummings’ name nearly 10 years ago, we knew that one day he had the potential to become an American hero. Now, his moment has arrived. In just a few days, the hometown kid from Beaufort will take his shot at Olympic stardom and U.S. weighlifting immortality. But his career and his incredible journey to the global stage in Tokyo almost never happened.

WES’s WISDOM: Technology has made podcasting possible for everyone – including you

The Internet has made it possible for us to express and communicate with each other in exciting new ways. And one of the most popular avenues is the podcast. It’s like a talk show, a conversation, and a night of storytelling all blended into one, like sitting by the campfire and chatting with your best friends.

WES’s WISDOM: ‘The Ghost’ defied the odds to excel at every level

There was very little interest at the college level for Beaufort High defensive back Ron Parker. But he wasn’t ready to let his gridiron dreams slip away that quickly. It would take a steep road with lots of hurdles to get to the top of the mountain, and Parker was ready to accept the challenge.

WES’s WISDOM: Chill out with these great books for sports fans this summer

Summer is finally here, and that means an opportunity for all of us to kick back and relax after a long and challenging year. One of the best parts of the long-awaited season? Heading over to the beach, the pool, or even just the porch and delving into a great book. It’s summer reading season, and if you’re a sports fan and are looking for some insightful and inspirational reads, you’re in luck. Here are a few of my favorite sports-related books to enjoy, wherever your go-to reading spot may be.
