• Brandon Howard, THA: The Rebels’ two-way senior star continues to terrorize opponents on both sides of the ball. Against JPII, he rushed five times for 56 yards and 2 TDs and passed for 84 yards and 2 TDs … while racking up 14 tackles and a pick on defense.

• Jaxen Porter, BA: A versatile back who can do it all, Porter took the leading role in the backfield against HHP and racked up 215 yards and 3 TDs on 25 carries to go along with a TD reception and four tackles.

• Max Vonhohenstraeten, BLHS: Mad Max did it again in the second half Friday, throwing five of his six touchdown passes after the break and finishing 18-of-31 for 377 yards in a wild comeback win at Colleton County. Vonhohenstraeten leads the Lowco with 224 passing yards per game.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Hilton Head Christian Academy Eagles (6-0, 2-0)

Despite being the reigning SCISA 2A champions and a perfect record to start the season, Ron Peduzzi’s team still seems to carry a chip on its shoulder, and the Eagles aren’t afraid to use it to their advantage. With a high-flying Pinewood Prep team coming into The Cage last week, we expected to see the Eagles’ secondary tested like never before. HHCA tested out. The Eagles put up 48 points in a flash, as Jace Blackshear, Joseph Robinson, and Jackson Lanier ran roughshod over the Panthers, and the Junkyard Dog defense didn’t allow a point until the reserves took over in the fourth quarter. The Eagles still face a couple tough tests in region play, and anything can happen in the playoffs, but they’ve made it clear they have no intention of relinquishing their throne.

GAME OF THE WEEK

May River (4-2, 1-0) at Bluffton (2-3, 1-0)

The Hometown Showdown hasn’t been competitive recently, as the Sharks have run up lopsided wins over the Bobcats, but Bluffton still holds the series lead 5-2 and would very much like to reverse the recent trend in front of what should be a packed house at home. Bluffton’s defense has been outstanding, but an excellent defensive front will face a tough challenge in stopping May River quarterback Garvin Douglas, the Lowco’s leading rusher. On the other side of the equation, the Sharks’ young defense has grown into a formidable unit as the puzzle pieces have slid into place, but the Bobcats’ newfound passing game could cause some problems for the May River secondary. Max Vonhohenstraeten has a knack for getting the ball to the right spot, and the Bobcats’ talented receiving corps led by Jaylin Linder, Robert Brown, and KJ Frazier can go get it. This one should be tons of fun.
