The Hilton Head Island High School girls swept the top five places in a dominant performance and Bluffton High School’s boys placed five runners in the top nine to claim the team titles at the Beaufort County Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Sarah Cooke won the 5K girls race in 19:59 with teammates Tori Herman (20:05), Isabel Muehleman (20:08), Abby Gross (20:20), and Sarah Neville (20:42) on her heels as the Seahawks scored a perfect 15 points. May River (52 points) edged Bluffton by four points for second place in the girls standings.
With the top runners for the powerhouse HHIHS boys out of town competing in another race, Bluffton’s boys scored 34 points to win a hotly-contested race over May River (52) and Beaufort High (54).
Beaufort High’s Marlon Belden (17:24) and Nash Mills (17:26) finished first and second with May River’s Owen Andrews (17:31) third, but a pack of Bobcats came across next with Armando Jimenez (17:36) leading the way in fourth.
