Lowco HS Boys Tennis Roundup: March 15-17

Beaufort High boys tennis established itself as the frontrunner in Region 7-4A with wins over the top two contenders to knock the Eagles off their pedestal, and May River took down crosstown rival Bluffton in action this week. Here’s the Lowco HS Boys Tennis Roundup for March 15-17.


Beaufort 4, James Island 2

The Eagles took down the top contender to their Region 7-4A crown with a 4-2 win at James Island, taking four of the five singles matches, including a three-set win for Diego Alvarez at No. 2 to clinch the win. Beaufort (2-1, 2-0) picked up another win over Hilton Head High on Thursday to stay perfect in region play.

Hilton Head High 5, Colleton County 1

The Seahawks handed the Cougars their first region defeat of the season, as Colleton County’s Raphael Vassel won at No. 1 singles but HHIHS swept the remaining five courts in straight sets to remain perfect in Region 7-4A by winning their second of four matches on consecutive days. The Cougars (3-2, 2-1) host Bluffton on Monday.

The Sharks were too strong at the top of the lineup, taking the top four singles matches to overcome a deep Bluffton lineup that picked up wins at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles. May River (1-3) plays at HHIHS on Wednesday, while Bluffton (1-3, 0-3) travels to Colleton County on Monday.

The Trojans bounced back from a tough loss to Beaufort High to hand the Seahawks their first region defeat, taking four of five singles courts and sweeping two doubles matches in an impressive showing. HHIHS (4-1) was back in action at Beaufort on Thursday.

The Eagles continued their dominant run toward another Region 7-4A title with a sweep of the visiting Seahawks, winning all six matches in straight sets to remain undefeated in region play. HHIHS (4-2, 4-2) plays a non-region match against island rival Hilton Head Prep on Monday at South Beach Racquet Club, while Beaufort (3-1, 3-0) hosts Lucy Beckham on Tuesday.
