H2 Basketball presents the 2020-21 All-Lowco Boys Basketball Team

No one knew what to expect from the high school basketball season last winter. The pandemic was in full swing, and the prospect of playing indoor sports was worrisome, at best. But most local teams persevered, and hoops fans were rewarded with plenty of inspirational play and an incredible playoff run.

Hilton Head High capitalized on the addition of a high-profile transfer that proved to be the missing piece to the puzzle for Chane Brown’s Seahawks, who made an unprecedented run to the Class 4A state championship game, and a deep pool of talented teams from around the Lowco battled it out in an entertaining season — one we weren’t sure we would see.

The LowcoSports editorial staff crunched the numbers and consulted with area coaches to compile a list of the top 31 high school hoopers in our coverage area last season, and they make up the 2020-21 All-Lowco Boys Basketball Team presented by H2 Basketball.

Chane Brown, HHIHS

When Chane Brown returned to his alma mater for the 2019-20 season, the results were immediately impressive. The Seahawks showed a renewed commitment to team defense and surged to a surprising second-place finish in Region 7-4A, and with a talented nucleus returning, expectations were high for Brown’s second season at the helm. Thanks in part to the addition of UNC Wilmington signee Will McCracken, Hilton Head High exceeded the lofty expectations by finishing 16-3 overall and undefeated in a competitive region before advancing to the Class 4A title game, where they suffered a heart-breaking 52-50 loss to South Pointe to cap off the best season in program history.

Will McCracken, HHIHS

When Will McCracken learned his family was moving back to Hilton Head Island, the future UNC Wilmington Seahawk wanted to find the best fit for his senior season. Boy, did he find it. Despite playing in a more controlled, half-court system at Cincinnati’s Archbishop Moeller, McCracken flourished in Chane Brown’s system, which emphasizes team defense and up-tempo transition offense. McCracken racked up 20.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, and he always seemed to find an extra gear late in close games. Paired with D1 football recruits Sam Summa and Jaylen Sneed, McCracken and Co. could crank it up at a moment’s notice, running the break and throwing down jams at a rate that earned the Seahawks the nickname of “Dunk Island” as they slammed one opponent after another en route to a state runner-up finish.
