Each week throughout the high school girls basketball season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.
We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.
Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.
ADDITIONAL BASKETBALL SPONSORSHIP PROVIDED BY
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dior Shelton, HHCA
Shelton had another monster week for the Eagles, averaging 25.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and four assists in a pair of wins, including a career-high 33 (25 in the first half) in a big region win over Beaufort Academy.
Also nominated: Coresha Rutledge, BCHS; Layla Warren, BHS; Tatyana Aiken, BLHS; Haylee Hopman, HHP; Tkai DeVore, JPII; Chynna Sneed, MRHS

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jasmine Campbell, HHCA
Campbell was a beast inside for HHCA in two wins this week, racking up 11.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per contest. The senior posted double-doubles in both games, including a ridiculous 21 boards against Bulloch Academy.
Also nominated: Coresha Rutledge, BCHS; Layla Warren, BHS; Cassandra Gray, BLHS; Kierstin Clark, HHP; Abby Quinty, JPII; Chynna Sneed, MRHS

TEAM OF THE WEEK
May River Sharks (2-0 last week, 13-5 overall)
The Sharks made it through the first round of the Region 8-3A schedule unscathed and are off to a great start the second time around, sitting at 6-0 in region play. They’ve won eight straight and are undefeated in 2020, and they have the pieces to make a deep run in the postseason.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Beaufort High at HHIHS, 6 p.m. Friday
It’s quite likely the outcome of this one will determine which of these teams goes to the playoffs and which calls it an early spring next week. Each team has just one region victory, putting the Eagles and Seahawks in a tie for the third and final automatic playoff berth from Region 7-4A. The loser might still be in the running for an at-large bid, but a win will remove the guesswork and anxiety.
