4M Metals Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight, Jan. 21

Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

ADDITIONAL BASKETBALL SPONSORSHIP PROVIDED BY

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zhani Thompson, WB

The Warriors’ junior wing averaged a double-double in the team’s first two region games, posting 13 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. She had a monster game with 12 points and 18 boards in a road win over No. 10 Barnwell on Thursday.

Also nominated: Layla Warren, BHS; Tacoya Heyward, BLHS; Morgan Kinlaw-Scott, MRHS; Jasmine Campbell, HHCA; Abby Quinty, JPII; Mike’Ala Washington, BA

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tatyana Aiken, BLHS

The elder half of “TnT,” Aiken had a huge week to lead the Bobcats to a 3-1 record, including a 2-0 start to region play. She averaged 14.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.0 steals, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks

Also nominated: Nyja Deville, BHS; Emma Peluso, MRHS; Erin Rivers, WB; Jasmine Campbell, HHCA; Kierstin Clark, HHP; Jasmine Hamilton, JPII

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Hilton Head Christian Academy Eagles (3-0 last week, 17-2 overall)

The defending SCISA 2A state champion Eagles have yet to be tested by a SCISA opponent (their two losses came to Georgia powers Beach and Bulloch Academy) and they had little trouble dispatching the biggest threat to their region title hopes. HHCA handled John Paul II by 30 points and also posted lopsided wins over Colleton Prep (63-22) and Savannah Country Day (52-28).

GAME OF THE WEEK
Beaufort Academy at John Paul II, 6 p.m. Tuesday

If HHCA is the clear-cut class of the region, BA and JPII are playing for second place. The Eagles will have their hands full trying to slow down JPII star Tkai DeVore, but BA has a strong combination of veteran leadership and young talent that should make this an entertaining matchup.
