HSVB: Dolphins, Sharks Sweep First-Round Playoff Matchups

Battery Creek and May River swept into the second round of the Class 3A volleyball playoffs with easy wins Wednesday.

Region 8-3A champion Battery Creek swept Cheraw 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-9) behind a balanced effort, as four players recorded at least six kills. McKenzie Young had a team-high seven kills to go with 10 assists, Page MacArthur had six kills, and Laiani McCullough and Dazanni Hinton each added six kills and two blocks. Danni Ramirez dished out 14 assists and had six aces, and Caroline Malphrus added six aces and two kills. The Dolphins will host Hanahan in a second-round match Monday.

May River swept Aynor 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20). The Sharks will travel to top-seeded Gilbert for a second-round matchup Monday. Ridgeland-Hardeeville lost to Loris in the first round.

In Class 2A, Whale Branch lost at Philip Simmons 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-23).

The Class 4A playoffs get underway Thursday, with Bluffton traveling to AC Flora and Beaufort High hosting Wilson. Hilton Head High has a first-round bye and awaits the North Augusta-Hartsville winner in Tuesday’s second round.
