Beaufort High baseball clinched the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A playoffs with a 6-3 win in nine innings Wednesday at Bluffton.
Beaufort’s James Davenport blanked the Bobcats for five innings before Bluffton rallied for three runs in the sixth to tie it and force extras. After two scoreless extra frames, the Eagles got a rally going with back-to-back singles from Patrick Daley and Josh Denton to start the ninth and took advantage of two critical errors to push across three runs.
Daley then worked around a leadoff error to retire the next three Bobcat batters and seal the win. Daley struck out six and allowed just one hit over four strong innings in relief of Davenport, who limited the Bobcats to three runs (two earned) on nine hits over five-plus innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
William Winburn was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Eagles, while Denton added two hits and an RBI and Daley went 2-for-4.
Eric Eastham and Cameron Poliquin each had two hits and an RBI, and Carson Yeager added two hits for the Bobcats. Nico Martucci gave Bluffton a stellar outing on the mound, striking out five and allowing three unearned runs and five hits over eight innings with just one walk.
The Eagles (10-8, 8-2) will continue to tune-up for the playoffs with a non-region game at Hanahan on Thursday. The Bobcats (4-10, 1-9) travel to Barnwell for a non-region contest Friday.
