HS GOLF: Balanced Eagles edge Seahawks at Pinecrest

Beaufort High used another balanced effort throughout the lineup to edge Hilton Head High by two shots for another Region 7-4A golf win Thursday at Pinecrest Golf Club in Bluffton.

The Eagles had only one player crack the top six individually, but all four of their scoring players were in the top 10 en route to a team score of 163. The Seahawks (165) and May River (170) weren’t far behind, with James Island (178) in fourth and Bluffton (190) in fifth. Colleton County had only three golfers, so the Cougars did not record a team score.

May River’s Andrew Swanson earned medalist honors with a blistering 2-under-par 36, beating Hilton Head’s Nolan Hawkins and James Island’s Connor Heyboer by three shots.

Simon McAlister carded a 38 to lead the champion Eagles, followed closely by Jack Sumner’s 41 and a pair of 42s from Jerry Bruns and Jack Lubkin, and Beaufort’s drop score was a solid 44 from Mason Westerfield.

May River’s Braydon O’Leary (39) finished fifth, and HHIHS’ Garrett Fader (40) was sixth, while Bluffton’s Jones Saylor (42) tied for eighth.

The next region match is slated for Tuesday at Dataw Island Club.
