HHIH&B Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight, Jan. 14

Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the high school boys basketball season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.

We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.

PRESENTING SPONSOR

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tyler Rice, BLHS

Rice had two big games this week to lead the Bobcats to victories over county rivals. He put up 18 points in a win over Battery Creek on Tuesday and carried Bluffton to a 52-50 victory at May River on Saturday with a game-high 22 points.

Also nominated: Oliver Holmes, BHS; Brandon Howard, RHHS; Tyrone Calloway, HHP; Sam Summa, HHIHS; Nick Pringle, WB; Zack Black, THA

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Luke Foley, HHP

Foley was an unsung hero during the Dolphins’ 3-0 week, handling his usual assignment of defending the opponent’s top post player and controlling the boards. He averaged 5.7 rebounds this week despite playing limited minutes in two of the three games because of the lopsided score.

Also nominated: Oliver Holmes, BHS; Brandon Howard, RHHS; Sam Summa, HHIHS; Lee Kirkland, BLHS; Shawn Chisolm, WB; Zack Black, THA

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Hilton Head High Seahawks (2-0 last week, 7-7 overall)

The Seahawks clawed back to .500 with a pair of wins this week, beating John Paul II (70-34) and Battery Creek (52-41) before taking the weekend off to regroup before region play. Hilton Head High showed big improvement at the defensive end, which is going to be critical to having success in region play.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Bluffton at Colleton County, 7:30 p.m. Friday

The second region game of the season seems awfully early to say it could determine the region favorite, but that’s how this one is shaping up. The Cougars are probably the team to beat after knocking off a strong Whale Branch team on Saturday, but the Bobcats appear to be the team with the best shot of changing that hierarchy.
