Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the high school boys basketball season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.
We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.
Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Girls Basketball Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dior Shelton, HHCA
Shelton has emerged as the Eagles’ go-to player when they need a bucket. She averaged 21.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.0 steals, and 3.7 assists to lead the Eagles to three wins this week, including a 30-point victory over previously undefeated Beaufort Academy and an overtime win over Georgia power Calvary Day.
Also nominated: Kynew Barnwell, WB; DeAmante Gadson, BCHS; Miley Ray, HHIHS; Ella Clark, HHP; Olivia Peluso, MRHS; Tkai DeVore, JPII; Bayli Belger, THA; Layla Warren, BHS
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chynna Sneed, MRHS
While the guards get a lot of the credit for slowing down Bluffton’s dynamic duo of Tatyana Aiken and Tacoya Heyward, the inside presence of Sneed also played a big role in the Bobcats’ inability to get to the basket or get second chances. She had 18 rebounds against Bluffton and also had a solid week at the other end of the floor, averaging 10.7 points in three games.
Also nominated: Jazmin Diaz, WB; Starr Reed, BCHS; Kierstin Clark, HHP; Janiya Ferebee, HHIHS; Brielle McCarthy, HHCA; Tkai DeVore, JPII; Keleigh Bowers, THA; Nyja Deville, BHS
TEAM OF THE WEEK
May River Sharks (3-0 last week, 7-5 overall)
When the coach of the reigning Team of the Week nominates a competitor for the award, it captures your attention. Bluffton coach Lonnie Roberts did just that after May River’s triangle-and-2 defense frustrated Roberts’ Bobcats in a 44-29 win Saturday. The Sharks also took down Beaufort High (49-21) and won their region opener over Lake Marion (56-38) this week.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Bluffton at Colleton County, 6 p.m. Friday
The Bobcats looked like the team to beat in Region 7-4A until May River found a way to slow them down. Now the question is whether they will be able to adjust to the copycat gameplans that are sure to follow. The Bobcats and Cougars are similar teams who thrive off using their athleticism to create turnovers that lead to easy buckets. This one should be worth the price of admission.
