HHI&B Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight, Dec. 31

Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the high school boys basketball season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action.

We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.

PRESENTING SPONSOR

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jamaad Rivers, BHS

Rivers did everything in his power to keep the Eagles competitive in three games at the Bobcat Classic, averaging 22 points — including a 34-point outburst in a win over Charleston Collegiate. The senior guard also pulled down 10 boards and had four assists to go with 24 points in a loss to South Point (N.C.).

Also nominated: Tyler Rice, BLHS; Rashard Baker, RHHS; Floyd Hargrove, HHCA

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Zyrin Odom, BHS

Sure, the Eagles went 1-2 in the Bobcat Classic, but the team record doesn’t take away from the fact Odom was an absolute monster. The sophomore big man averaged 15 points and 15.3 rebounds to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team, and he was one point away from posting double-doubles in all three contests.

Also nominated: Brandon Howard, RHHS; Daniel Harrington, HHCA

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Ridgeland-Hardeeville Jaguars (3-1 last week, 7-6 overall)

The Jaguars were inconsistent early in the season, but they showed signs of turning it on in time for region play with an impressive runner-up finish at the Orangeburg County Sweet 16 Tournament this weekend. Led by All-Tournament honorees Rashard Baker and Brandon Howard, the Jags made a spirited run to the championship game before falling to undefeated Bishop England, and they did it with only one player averaging double-digit scoring in the tournament.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Beaufort Academy at Hilton Head Prep, 7:30 p.m. Friday

There aren’t many boys games on the local schedule this week, but the ones that do dot the local landscape are region contests, and none bigger than this. Beaufort Academy is a SCISA 1A team playing in a hybrid region with 2A teams, and matchups like this one with the defending SCISA 2A champion Dolphins will aid the Eagles in their quest for a state title.
