HH Insurance & Brokerage Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight, Dec. 16

Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the high school boys basketball season, we will recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action.

We will select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.

PRESENTING SPONSOR

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyrone Calloway, HHP

The Dolphins had to replace a lot of talent off last year’s team, but they still have Calloway, who has free rein to take over the offense this season. He did just that to lead HHP to two wins this week, putting up 30 points to go with five rebounds and three assists in a 69-62 win at Memorial Day and contributing 14 points, 12 boards, and four assists in a 44-40 win over Cathedral Academy.

Also nominated: Elijah Fess, BA; Zyrin Odom, BHS; JP Peduzzi, HHCA; Shawn Chisolm, WB; Dean Seelbach, HHIHS; Eric Eastham, BLHS; Mauriq Singleton, RHHS

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shemar Williams, WB

Shawn Chisolm and Nick Pringle get most of the attention, and deservedly so, but fellow senior Williams is also putting in work in the paint. Williams isn’t a big-time scorer, but averaged 5.7 points in three games this week while also pulling down five boards per game and totaling seven steals and two blocks.

Also nominated: Elijah Fess, BA; Zyrin Odom, BHS; Dean Seelbach, HHIHS

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Whale Branch Warriors (2-1 last week, 4-2 overall)

A week that started with a tough loss at Wade Hampton led to a sensational weekend for the Warriors. They dominated both of their major crosstown rivals, winning 72-49 at Beaufort High on Friday and 74-36 at Battery Creek on Saturday. Shawn Chisolm had a monster week, and Nick Pringle put on a show with a handful of highlight-reel dunks against Beaufort.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Bluffton at Whale Branch, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

The Warriors continue their quest to conquer Beaufort County when they host the Bobcats for a mid-week matchup. Bluffton matches up a bit better with Whale Branch than most teams, thanks to big man Lee Kirkland and athletic wing Tyler Rice. The Bobcats might try to pack it in and take away the Warriors’ bigs and see if the guards can beat them.

PAST WINNERS

Dec. 9: Shawn Chisolm, WB; Nick Pringle, WB; Beaufort Academy

Dec. 16: Tyrone Calloway, HHP; Shemar Williams, WB; Whale Branch
