Hilton Head High’s girls raced to a state title, and the Seahawk boys finished third Tuesday at the Class 4A Cross Country State Championships in Camden.
The Seahawk girls posted a team total of 61 points to easily defeat runner-up Greenville (92) and earn their first Class 4A title and their sixth overall. HHIHS won five Class 3A titles in an eight-year stretch from 2008-15. Beaufort High (233) was eighth, and Bluffton (333) was 14th.
All five of Hilton Head High’s scoring runners finished in the top 25, with Sarah Neville (18:53) leading the way in fourth, followed by Cynthia Gudaitis (19:16) in ninth, and Tori Herman (19:19) in 11th. Sarah Cooke (19:51) was 20th, and Reagan Gilman (20:02) was 25th to round out a strong team effort for the Seahawks.
Beaufort’s Shannon Smith (18:45) and Charlize Antia (18:51) finished second and third behind champion Mari Cagle Lockhart of Daniel, who finished in 18:16.
Ava Gerschutz (19:52) led Bluffton with a 21st-place finish.
The Seahawk boys used a balanced effort to finish third with 87 points, behind Greer (42) and Eastside (69), falling short in their bid for a seventh consecutive state title. Logan Seifert led Hilton Head High with a 13th-place finish in 16:18, followed in close succession by teammates Jasper Reinhardt (16:25) in 14th, Max Baez (16:28) in 17th, Jossue Rondin (16:47) in 21st, and Will Lemire (16:48) in 22nd.
Beaufort finished fourth and had three runners in the top 12, led by runner-up Marlon Belden, who finished in 15:10 but didn’t have quite enough kick to catch Greer’s Coen Roberts down the stretch. Teammate Nash Mills (16:09) placed 10th, and Maxwell Davis (16:15) was 12th.
