May River and Battery Creek started off the Class 3A volleyball playoffs with wins Wednesday, kicking off a busy week of postseason action for area teams.
The top-seeded Sharks rolled to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-7) victory over visiting Edisto in the first round, setting up a second-round home match with Aynor at 6 p.m. Monday. Addison Black led May River with 12 kills and six aces, while Lillian Long added eight kills, and Chynna Sneed had five.
Region 8-3A runner-up Battery Creek also swept through its first-round match, beating visiting Pelion 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-14). Halle DeJesus passed out 23 assists and served nine aces, while Laiani McCullough added nine kills and eight digs, and Dazanni Hinton had nine kills and four aces.
The Dolphins will travel Monday to top-seeded Dillon, which needed five sets to get past No. 4 seed Hanahan in the first round.
In Class 2A, Whale Branch dropped its opener to Johnsonville 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-8), while in Class 1A, Bridges Prep lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-7) to Green Sea-Floyds, and Royal Live Oaks fell 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-21) to Bethune-Bowman after claiming the first set.
The Class 4A playoffs begin Thursday, with Bluffton traveling to Hartsville and Beaufort High hosting North Augusta. Region 7-4A champion Hilton Head High has a first-round bye and awaits the Aiken-Dreher winner in Tuesday’s second round.
