HS Wrestling: Levy, Humel, Grant Make State Finals

Three Beaufort County wrestlers will compete for state titles on Saturday after winning their first two matches at the SCHSL State Championships on Friday in Anderson.

Hilton Head High’s James Levy advanced to the Class 4A 106-pound final and May River’s Ryan Humel (182) and Roderick Grant (195) made the Class 3A finals with two wins Friday. 

Levy will face South Pointe’s Spencer Cox in the finals, while Humel will take on Crescent’s Jamie Ellis and Grant will wrestle Crescent’s CC Spires. 

Beaufort HIgh’s Matthew Durrance (132) and Jacob Denton (138) and Battery Creek’s Syncere Atkins (145) each won their first-round match before losing the semifinals and will need one win Saturday to secure a top-four finish. 

The remainder of the area wrestlers — Whale Branch’s Richard Parker (132), De’Arius Hazel (195), and Zakariya Williams (220); May River’s Travis Tran (106), Rodney Romero (132), Jaxon Meriwether (145), Eli Hall (220), and Kailin Prescott-Ferguson (285); Battery Creek’s Larson McManigle (138), Chris Appleby (152), and Alex Linares (160); Bluffton’s Xavier Dykstra (220); Hilton Head High’s Drew Vigh (113); and Beaufort High’s Gary Bayne (106), Marcus Spann (126), Robert Cruikshank (145), James Dagin (152), Jeremiah Simmons (160), Michael Cenci (170), and Theo Washington (195) — lost their first-round matches and will need at least two wins Saturday to medal.
