HS Tennis: Ruckno, Daniel Earn All-State Honors

Hilton Head High’s Emily Ruckno and Beaufort High’s McKenzie Daniel claimed All-State honors at the SCHSL Class 5A/4A singles tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday in Columbia.

Ruckno went 4-2 in the tournament to finish sixth, while Daniel was 3-2 to finish in the top eight.

Ruckno defeated Spring Valley’s Crawford Latham 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the first round and rallied to beat Mauldin’s Jyoshita Umasankar 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 in her second match before falling 2-6, 1-6 to eventual runner-up Abby Cotuna of Berkeley. In the back draw on Wednesday, Ruckno defeated Greenwood’s Adair Still 8-4 and beat AC Flora’s Raquel Acco 8-3 before losing the fifth-place match 8-2 to Blythewood’s Erica Zippel.

Daniel swept Sumter’s Whitney Crawford and AC Flora’s Megan Pleasant 6-0, 6-0 in her first two matches before losing 6-1, 6-1 to eventual champion Maggie Cubitt. She came back to beat Latham 8-6 to earn All-State honors for the third straight year, then lost 8-1 to Zippel in the consolation semifinal.
