HSFB: RBC Heritage Player of the Week Nominees, Week 2

Another week of high school football, another crowded ballot for the RBC Heritage Player of the Week.

In fact, the performances across the area have been strong enough through the first two weeks of the season that I’ve made the executive decision to bump the number of weekly nominees up from 10 to 12. Take a look below and you’ll see why.

A refresher on how we’re doing this for 2018: A total of five votes will be cast for the official RBC Heritage Player of the Week — one each from myself, fellow former Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette Sports Editor Mike McCombs, WJCL’s Frank Sulkowski, and WSAV’s Greg Talbott — and one by YOU, which will go to the winner of the fan vote. And the number of fan votes is the tiebreaker, meaning you wield a lot of power in this relationship, so go forth and campaign for your guy.

The nominees are:

• BA QB Dawson Coleman: 153 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 10 carries; 4-for-8 passing for 49 yards and a TD in 52-33 loss to Clarendon Hall

• HHIHS WR/DB Cole DeMarzo: 2 receptions for 44 yards and 2 TDs; 14 tackles, TFL, and 2 pass break-ups in 34-0 win over St. James

• HHIHS RB Will Frith: 45 yards and a TD on seven carries; 2 receptions for 55 yards and a TD in 34-0 win over St. James

• JPII RB/LB Melik Frost: 103 yards and a TD on 12 carries; 7 tackles, 2 TFLs in 56-19 loss to Thomas Heyward

• RHHS RB Mar’Quese Grant: 110 yards and 2 TDs on 13 carries in 29-0 win over Estill

• RHHS WR Brandon Howard: 100 yards and a TD on 2 carries; 5 receptions for 62 yards; 6 tackles in 29-0 win over Estill

• MRHS RB Brandon Morales: 215 yards and 3 TDs on 30 carries in 35-21 win over Bluffton

• WBECHS RB Irvin Mulligan: 134 yards and 3 TDs on six carries; 1 reception for 63 yards and a TD in 47-0 win over Cross

• THA RB JR Patterson: 161 yards and a TD on 11 carries in 56-19 win over JPII

• THA WR/DB Trey Pusha: 174 all-purpose yards; 47-yard TD reception; 60-yard INT TD; 71-yard kickoff return TD; 9 tackles, TFL in 56-19 win over JPII

• BLHS WR Shamar Sandgren: 8 receptions for 81 yards and a TD; 87-yard kickoff return TD in 35-21 loss to May River

• BHS QB/DB Jeffrey Smyth: 11-for-15 passing for 234 yards and a TD; 4 yards and a TD on 3 carries; 5 tackles, 1 TFL, one sack in 48-6 win over Battery Creek
