A total of 24 Beaufort County wrestlers punched their tickets to the SCHSL state tournament with top-four finishes at their respective Lower State meets Saturday.
Beaufort High School led the local contingent with six state qualifiers in Class 4A, while Hilton Head High (4A) and May River (3A) qualified five wrestlers each, and Battery Creek (3A) and Whale Branch (2A-1A) each will send four wrestlers to state.
At the Class 4A meet at Beaufort High, the host Eagles had two individual champions – Luis Pantoja (120 pounds) and Marcus Spann (126) – while Jacob Workman (113) and Justin Campbell (145) finished second, James Dagin (152) was third, and Aaron Wiess (195) was fourth. Hilton Head High had three champs – Rawlin Szewczyk (113), Alex Braden (145), and Billy Christie (170) – and two runners-up in Kyle Riddle (126) and James Roberts (138).
At the Class 3A meet, host May River had one champion in Ryan Humel (170), two runners-up – Mitch Ledbetter (145) and Kailin Ferguson (285) – and two third-place finishers – Ivan Ramirez (138) and Roderick Grant (195). Three Battery Creek wrestlers claimed individual titles – Zacheus Magwood (152), Ahman Smalls (195) and Khalil Chisolm (220) – and Eduardo Almanza-Castillo (160) finished fourth.
At the Class 2A-1A meet, Whale Branch had two champs – Jamel Moultrie (145) and Tyrell Chaplin-Feagin (160) – while Malik Moultrie (106) and James Jackson (120) finished fourth.
The state championships are Friday and Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center.
