Two dynasties continued Saturday at the SCHSL Class 4A cross country championships at Sandhills Research Center.
Hilton Head Island High School’s boys won their fifth consecutive state title in longtime coach Bill Wrightson’s swansong, and junior Sam Gilman continued his family’s reign, winning the individual title to follow in the footsteps of his two-time state champion brother, Ben.
The Seahawk boys edged Eastside by five points to claim the team title, while Beaufort High finished sixth, marking the best finish in program history.
Gilman finished the 5K race in 15:36, beating Eastside’s Noah White by six seconds and leading a pack of three Seahawks in the top five. Ryan Moosbrugger (15:57) and Joshua Williams (16:12) were fourth and fifth.
Freshman Marlon Belden finished 11th in 16:35 to join the HHIHS trio on the 15-member All-State team.
HHIHS GIRLS FINISH SECOND
The Seahawks narrowly missed the sweep, finishing 16 points behind Daniel to claim a runner-up finish in the girls standings. Beaufort was 16th.
Tori Herman (18:52) and Isabel Muehleman (19:00) finished fourth and fifth to lead HHIHS, and Sarah Cooke (19:28) finished 15th to earn a spot on the All-State team.
