May River High School will be a hotbed of high school wrestling talent Thursday and Friday, with 35 teams and more than 400 wrestlers from five states on display for the Shark Invitational wrestling tournament.
The field includes plenty of local talent with the host Sharks joined in the field by Region 7-4A rivals Bluffton, Lucy Beckham, and Hilton Head High, along with Class 3A rivals Battery Creek and Beaufort High and upstart programs from Bridges Prep, Colleton Prep, and Thomas Heyward.
Nine teams in the field are ranked inside the top 10 in their classifications by SCMat.com, including three top-10 squads from Class 4A (No. 4 May River, No. 5 Greenwood, No. 9 Hilton Head) and three from Class 3A (No. 6 Hanahan, No. 7 Battery Creek, No. 10 Philip Simmons). Class 5A No. 4 Fort Mill should also be among the top contenders.
We caught up with May River coach Ashley Powell on Wednesday to preview the big event.
