GOLF: Beaufort finishes 4th, Bruns picks up all-state honors

The Beaufort High boys golf team brought its best to Columbia, but nobody could keep up with the high-flying A.C. Flora Falcons.

Fueled by a top-10 finish by Jerry Bruns, the Eagles shot a two-day 627 to take fourth place at the SCHSL 4A state tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Forest Lake Golf Club. May River finished 12th with a total of 667, and Hilton Head High was 15th with a 672.

Bruns delivered a pair of quality rounds to lead the Eagles, firing a 75 and 74 for a strong 5-over 149 and a tie for eighth place individually with Greenville’s Hugh Faulkner. Jack Lubkin notched a tie for 17th with back-to-back rounds of 77, and Jack Sumner tied for 37th with a 162.

The Eagles couldn’t match a dominant showing from A.C. Flora, who showcased its elite depth with four finishers in the top five for an 11-under 565 and its second consecutive state title. North Augusta (605) took second place, and Indian Land (620) placed third on the strength of low medalist and individual state champion Mason Kucia with a 3-under 141.

Nolan Hawkins (160) tied for 32nd to lead Hilton Head High, and Jackson Crouch (161) finished in a tie for 34th. Bluffton’s Jones Saylor carded a 163 playing as an individual, and Nick Nelson paced May River with a 165.
