HSBBB: Beaufort overwhelms Sharks, sets up title clash with Trojans

Beaufort High boys basketball set up a winner-take-all matchup with James Island for the Region 7-4A title with a convincing 66-50 win at May River on Thursday. 

The Eagles dominated from the outset, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and cruising into halftime up 40-22. Beaufort extended the margin to 31 heading to the fourth quarter before May River poured in 23 points in the final period to tighten the gap.

Beaufort’s big men had another big night, as James Dennison racked up 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Michael Dennison added 12 points and 11 boards. Jake Alvarez continued his strong play with 11 points, Anderson Jones contributed nine, and senior Davis Willis chipped in eight. 

James Layman poured in 26 points to lead the Sharks, who couldn’t get anyone else going. Josh Evander added six points, and leading scorer Gavin Blocker was limited to five, all in the fourth quarter. 

Beaufort (13-5, 10-1) travels to James Island on Friday with the winner claiming the region crown. May River (13-8, 6-6) awaits the result of Friday’s Hilton Head High-Lucy Beckham game to solidify its playoff seeding.
