After leading 19-16 at halftime, the Sharks got hot in the third quarter and opened up a 12-point lead midway through the period. But the Cougars came roaring back with a 12-0 run of their own, pulling within two by the end of the third and tying it in the opening seconds of the fourth.
Then Blocker went to work on the boards, putting back a missed free throw and a Layman misfire with a layup off a Chris Cash steal sandwiched between to help May River increase the margin to 42-36. After hitting one of two free throws to put the Sharks up seven, Blocker splashed a 3-pointer from the left wing to push the margin to double digits and put May River on its way to victory.
Blocker grabbed five rebounds and two steals to go with his 22 points, Layman contributed four boards and five assists along with his 14 points, and Douglas finished with 10 points, 12 boards, and three steals.
Deshaun Blocker scored 15 points, and Mykeem Gant added 14 for the Cougars.
May River (6-3, 1-0) travels to James Island on Friday, while the Cougars (4-3, 0-1) play at Hanahan on Wednesday.
