HSGBB: Trojans’ fourth-quarter spurt spoils Warriors’ comeback bid

Whale Branch girls basketball couldn’t keep up with a red-hot Cross team in the fourth quarter, falling to the Trojans 43-29 on the road Tuesday.

The Warriors kept it close in the first half, trailing 8-5 after one quarter before keeping pace with the Trojans in the second to go into the break down 16-13.

The game was there for the taking at the end of the third with Cross clinging to just a four-point lead, but Tranice Smalls and Lauren Middleton found their stroke late to spark a 17-7 run as the Trojans pulled away for the victory.

Kynew Barnwell paced Whale Branch with nine points, and Kiana Smashum added eight.

Whale Branch (3-3, 0-1) faces Palmetto Scholars Academy at home Friday.
