HSGBB: Youthful Seahawks start strong with tourney title

Second-year Hilton Head High girls basketball coach Russell Raniszewski knew he had a talented young team returning this season, and the Seahawks are already proving him right.

Hilton Head High ran through the bracket at the Earl Campbell Preseason Tournament at Whale Branch Early College High School, winning the title with a 43-41 victory over Fort Dorchester on Tuesday.

Lynda Young earned a spot on the all-tournament team after posting double-doubles in all three games of the tournament. The sophomore poured in 20 points and snagged double-digit rebounds in the championship game, while Leah Jackson added six, and Deja Godsun and Janiya Ferebee chipped in five each in a defensive struggle.

The Seahawks pulled away in the fourth quarter of a 51-35 win over Whale Branch in the semifinals, as Young again dominated in the paint with 17 points, 14 boards, and five steals. Godsun, who joined Young on the all-tournament team, collected 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals against the Warriors, while Ferebee added 10 points, and Anna Genova contributed five points, three rebounds, and two blocks.

The Seahawks (3-0) travel to Savannah High on Tuesday.
