HSBBB: Sharks shake off slow start to stun Seahawks for tourney title

Garvin Douglas capped a 16-point night with the go-ahead layup with 8 seconds left to lift May River boys basketball to a 48-47 comeback win over Hilton Head High in the championship game of the Earl Campbell Preseason Tournament on Tuesday at Whale Branch Early College High School.

Douglas scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Sharks chip away at a nine-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, and his bucket with 8 seconds left put May River’s comeback over the top.

Gavin Blocker added 15 points, and Josh Evander had 11 for the Sharks, who got off to a sluggish start at the offensive end, managing only eight points in the first quarter and trailing 29-24 at halftime.

Jayden Gilliam scored 14 points to lead Hilton Head and hit a pair of key 3-pointers in the second half, but the Seahawks managed only five points in the fourth quarter. Karyce Campbell added 11 points, and Alex Smith had 10 for the Seahawks.

May River (3-0) travels to Effingham County on Dec. 3. HHIHS (2-1) travels to Wade Hampton on Dec. 3.
