HS BSOC: Claudio, Seahawks stymie Sharks for season sweep

Hilton Head High boys soccer completed the season sweep of May River on Tuesday, earning a 3-1 home victory in extra time.

The Sharks created numerous scoring chances in the first half, but couldn’t solve standout Seahawk goalkeeper Danny Claudio, who made three crucial saves in the first half and stopped a penalty kick to help his squad earn the massive win.

It was Hilton Head High who opened the scoring, drawing a penalty in the 39th minute before Nate Bowen buried the kick to take a 1-0 lead. May River fought back after halftime, and Zeke Chappelear found the back of the net in the 65th minute to even the contest.

But it was all Seahawks in overtime, as Allan Leyva scored in the first extra period before senior Nicko Morales delivered the dagger in the first minute of the second extra session to seal the victory.

Hilton Head (10-2, 7-1) hits the road Friday to face Beaufort High in another region matchup.

May River (7-4, 4-4) hosts fifth-ranked North Augusta on Friday for a non-region showdown.
