Beaufort High softball scored 23 runs in its season opener at home Monday against crosstown rival Battery Creek — and the Eagles still had to hold off a late rally to down the Dolphins 23-22 in a wild game that included 21 errors, 24 walks, and six hit-by-pitches.
The Dolphins and Eagles went back and forth throughout, but Beaufort scored 12 runs over the last two innings to stun the Dolphins on opening night for both teams.
The Eagles were led offensively by Carleigh Coolong (3-for-4, five runs), Nia Holmes (2-for-3, two runs, two RBIs), Nezi’le Chinchilla (2-for-5, two RBIs) and Leela Hildenbrand (2-for-6, RBI). Karley Rouse had a double and three RBIs for Beaufort, and Kylie Rast struck out 13 in an epic complete game while going 2-for-6 with a triple and an RBI at the plate.
Rast matched her 13 strikeouts with 13 walks and hit three batters, and she was hurt by 12 errors leading to 13 unearned runs, but she picked up a huge strikeout to end the game after the Dolphins had plated three runs in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate.
Caityln Bentley, Brooke Crosby and Elisa Williams each had a hit and two RBI’s while Bailey Emmert recorded two hits to lead the way for the Dolphin offense. Stella Schubert picked up the loss for Creek, pitching a complete game, allowing 15 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out one.
Creek jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Eagles answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Creek added six runs in the third but Beaufort wouldn’t be down for long as they pushed seven across the plate to take a 9-8 lead after three.
The Dolphins took advantage in the fourth, as the first two batters drew walks and Williams drove them home with a single. Creek was able to push across six more runs. However the Eagles never gave up as they chipped into the deficit with two in the fourth before knocking in eight in the fifth and four more in the sixth, then held on by the slimmest of margins.
Beaufort (1-0) travels to Thomas Heyward Academy on Wednesday.
Battery Creek (0-1) is on the road against Hilton Head High on Thursday.
