Hilton Head High girls lacrosse rode a brilliant second-half defensive effort to a 6-2 win Thursday over visiting May River.
All of the scoring occurred in the opening half, as the Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead and maintained the margin with a 6-2 advantage at halftime.
May River had opportunities to cut into the lead in the second half, but the visitors couldn’t solve red-hot Hilton Head goalie Megan Rickenbach, who shut down several waves of Shark pressure to seal the win.
Anna Ferrebee and Bailey Olive led the Hilton Head offense with two goals apiece, while Olive scooped up four ground balls. Allie Jeffrey and Sara Kate Shupp each added a goal for the Seahawks, and both Brooke Simons and Shupp tallied an assist. Rickenbach dazzled between the pipes, racking up nine saves.
Venessa Matuzak and Mary Agnes Wessels both found the back of the net for the Sharks.
Hilton Head (2-1, 2-1) travels to Beaufort on Monday.
May River (0-4, 0-3) plays a non-region contest at Richmond Hill on Saturday.
