May River girls soccer opened its season on a high note Thursday, taking down visiting Berkeley 3-1 at The Tank.
Emily Alonso, Zoe Stevenson, and Abby White all scored for the Sharks, who dominated possession all night, but had to work hard to find the back of the net.
Berkeley nearly grabbed the lead and the momentum early on, but goalkeeper Madison Hahn was able to deflect a ball in the box and defensive back Lucy Raisch cleared it off the goal line to keep the match scoreless.
Moments later, the freshman Alonso broke through, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead that held up through halftime. Early in the second, fellow freshman Zoe Stevenson floated a shot over the Stags keeper to double the margin.
Berkeley pulled one back with a bouncing shot that slipped past Hahn, and the Stags had a golden opportunity to gain the equalizer before May River’s Adrianna Machado cleared the ball up field.
Sharks captain Abby White later put in the clinching score with a beautiful strike from the left side of the box.
The Sharks (1-0) host John Paul II at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
