A total of 40 Beaufort County wrestlers from five schools will try to earn their spot in the state tournament Saturday at the Class 4A and 3A Lower State qualifiers.
The Class 4A qualifier gets underway at 11:30 a.m. at Bluffton High School, and 32 area wrestlers will be in contention for a coveted berth in the SCHSL State Championships next weekend at Dreher High School. In the Class 3A Lower State meet at West Oak, Battery Creek will have eight wrestlers vying to compete at the highest level in the state.
Fans will not be allowed at the events.
Class 4A runner-up May River leads the local contingent with 11 wrestlers competing, while Hilton Head High will have 10, followed by Bluffton with six and Beaufort High with five.
Among the wrestlers to watch are 2020 Class 3A champion Eli Hall of May River (220), two-time state runner-up James Levy (113) of Hilton Head High and teammate Zao Estrada (106), who is ranked 24th nationally among girls in her weight class. Returning state placers Anthony Nelsen (152, 4th in 2020) and Gabe Juarez (160, 3rd in 2020) of May River, Drew Vigh (126, 4th in 2019) of HHIHS, and Jeremiah Simmons (160, 3rd in 2020) and Colton Phares (170, 4th in 2020) of Beaufort High will try to earn another shot at a state title.
Only the top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament next weekend.
