4M Metals Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight (Feb. 2, 2021)

Throughout the high school girls basketball season, we’ll recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

Ki’Ayisa Moultrie, BHS

Moultrie is one of a number of Eagles who have stepped up to complement prolific scorer Layla Warren this season, and the junior had her best game thus far in a win over James Island last week. Moultrie scored 12 points — just two off Warren’s pace — and added 11 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, to help Beaufort High pick up a key region win.

Honorable Mention: Abby Peduzzi, HHCA; Tacoya Heyward, BLHS; Addison Black, MRHS; Mike’Ala Washington, BA; Iesha Shaw, BCHS

Layla Warren, BHS

In an ordinary season, a 1-0 week wouldn’t mean much and would be considered an anomaly. But in 2020-21, every win carries extra weight, and the Eagles picked up a big one last week that gives them a chance of improving their seed in the Region 7-4A tournament and making one last run at the playoffs. Warren always gets hers on offense, and she had a team-high 14 against the Trojans, but she made a bigger impact on defense with four boards, four deflections, and seven steals.

Honorable Mention: Mary Yanker, HHCA; Kayleigh Washington, BLHS; Jordan Bigham, MRHS; Layla Warren, BHS; Tahleea Heyward, BA; Maddie Heathcott, JPII

Hilton Head Christian Academy (3-1 last week, 16-1 overall)

Sure, the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season last week, snapping their 31-game winning streak dating to December 2019, but they also won three games in convincing fashion AND sought out the best competition they could find in the Palmetto State. The 20-pound drubbing at the hands of Cardinal Newman exposed HHCA’s minor flaws and will make the Eagles even more difficult to stop from winning their third consecutive SCISA 2A title.

Honorable Mention: Bluffton (1-0), Beaufort High (1-0), Beaufort Academy (1-0), May River (1-1)

BA at HHCA, 5:30 p.m. Saturday (at Island Rec Center)

We’ve been waiting all season for this matchup of last year’s SCISA 1A and 2A champs, and now we get it twice in four days. The home-and-home (sort of) set could be a preview of the SCISA 2A title game, and it certainly represents HHCA’s biggest threat to a fourth consecutive undefeated region mark. HHCA will be the favorite — and might win big — but it will be an excellent measuring stick for both teams.
