4M Metals Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight (Jan. 26, 2021

Throughout the high school girls basketball season, we’ll recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Girls Hoops Spotlight presented by 4M Metals.

Dior Shelton, HHCA

Call this one a lifetime achievement award if you must, because Ms. Shelton did get a little bump from crossing the 1,000-point threshold in Tuesday’s win at Pinewood Prep. She put up 14 in that one, collected 13 points and 11 boards in a win at Hilton Head Prep on Friday, and watched the reserves do most of the work in a rout of Thomas Hewyard on Saturday. Shelton’s stat lines might not always be as impressive as some of her peers because of the depth and strength of her supporting cast, but she’s still one of the Lowco’s best.

Honorable Mention: Morgan Kinlaw-Scott, MRHS; Layla Warren, BHS; Katie Rodney, BLHS; Taylor Michael, JPII

Jordan Bigham, MRHS

It has been a frustrating season offensively for Bigham, who has drawn tons of attention in the post, especially since a 23-point outburst against Pinewood Prep early in the season, but she has picked herself up at the defensive end. The senior big continued her work on the boards and defending the rim in a pair of wins this week, averaging 5.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and one block per contest.

Honorable Mention: Jayla Daise, BHS; Devon Yarde, HHCA; Cayce Graves, JPII; Kayleigh Washington, BLHS

Hilton Head Christian Academy (3-0 last week, 13-0 overall)

It’s easy to overlook the Eagles for this award because they always do what they’re supposed to do. But that ain’t easy, even if HHCA often makes it look like it is. That’s what the Eagles did this week in comfortable wins over Pinewood Prep, Hilton Head Prep and Thomas Heyward, showing off their depth in the rout of the Rebels. HHCA went and found another challenge this week, traveling to SCISA 3A power Cardinal Newman on Wednesday. If the Eagles survive that one, they might go undefeated.

Honorable Mention: May River (2-0); Bluffton (1-0); John Paul II (1-0)

Bluffton at May River, Friday

Every week, it seems a new challenger to the Region 7-4A leading Bobcats emerges. Thus far, none has been up to the task. But the Baby Sharks have been growing up since Bluffton blew out May River in the first meeting, and a cast of seniors who are finally getting their chance to shine has risen to the challenge. It’s still an uphill climb for May River against a Bobcats team that beats opponents up for 32 minutes, but with the added heat of the rivalry, this one will be worth the price of admission (or live streaming).
