HS SWIM: Seahawks outpace Sharks, Bobcats in first meet

Hilton Head High’s swimmers swept the boys and girls titles in a three-team meet featuring local Region 7-4A rivals Saturday at Island Rec Center.

May River’s girls put up quite a fight but still fell well short of the Seahawks’ total of 633.5 points, as the Sharks collected 478 points, followed by Bluffton with 86.5.

The Seahawks had only three individual titles — two from Skylar Bruner (200 free, 500 free) and one from Katie Lyons (200 IM) — and won the 400 free relay, but they showcased their depth to hold off the Sharks.

May River had three swimmers win five titles, as Allie Ingram (100 fly, 100 back) and Shelby Gourley (100 free, 100 breast) each won two races and Megan Rutan (50 free) won another. The Sharks also won the 200 free and 200 medley relays.

Hilton Head High’s boys easily outpaced the competition, as the Seahawks racked up 490 points, nearly doubling up runner-up Bluffton (254) and May River (248).

Cohen Bruner (100 free, 200 free) and Tommy Hughson (200 IM, 500 free) each won multiple events and helped the Seahawks claim the 400 free and 200 medley relays. Blaise Minkler (100 breast) also had an individual win for the Seahawks.

Bluffton had a pair of individual winners — Daniel Schwabauer (50 free) and Kevin Lagos (100 back) — and won the 200 free relay, while May River’s Joey Ingram won the 100 fly.

Hilton Head High hosts Beaufort High and Battery Creek at Island Rec Center next Saturday.
