HSVB: Raptors shut out Dolphins in season opener

Academic Magnet swept the Battery Creek volleyball team in the Dolphins’ season opener at the Palace on Tuesday, winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) in a Region 8-3A matchup.

Laiani McCullough led the offensive attack for the Dolphins, notching a team-high six aces to go with two kills and 11 assists. Caroline Malphrus recorded a team-high five kills, along with five digs and two aces.

Early in the opening frame, the Raptors took control, forcing Creek to take its first time out while trailing 10-4. Battery Creek rattled off three consecutive points before Academic Magnet rallied for seven straight. Following another short burst from the Dolphins, AMHS ran off with the first set 25-11.

Battery Creek had a more aggressive start in the second set, holding the lead until the Raptors tied it at 7. After a short lead for AMHS, McCullough recorded four straight aces to give the Dolphins the lead at 15-14, but the momentum was halted by the Raptors’ strong attack as Academic Magnet finished off the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.

Stanza three saw both teams exchanging points early on. Back-to-back aces from Battery Creek’s no. 9 gave the Dolphins the 9-7 advantage, forcing the Raptors to take its first timeout of the match. A flurry of points put the set back at a tie, but AMHS rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 19-12 lead, causing coach Terri McCullough to call a timeout. The Dolphins were able to score just three more points before Academic Magnet finished with an ace to collect its first win of the season.

Battery Creek travels to Hanahan at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
