Each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the high school boys basketball season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action with the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.
We select an offensive and defensive player of the week, as well as a Team of the Week, and highlight the biggest game of the upcoming week.
Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Boys Basketball Spotlight presented by Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage.
PRESENTING SPONSOR
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyrone Calloway, HHP
The Dolphins’ sharpshooter takes Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season after averaging a cool 28.5 points in two wins this week. The senior poured in 38 points — which amazingly only *matched* his season high — in a win over rival Hilton Head Christian Academy.
Also nominated: Shawn Chisolm, WB; Sam Summa, HHIHS; Rashard Baker, RHHS; Lee Kirkland, BLHS; Zyrin Odom, BHS; Dawson Coleman, BA
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lee Kirkland, BLHS
The Hulk had a big week in the paint for the Bobcats, averaging a square 11.3 points and 11.3 rebounds to help the Bobcats to a 2-1 record. His presence inside was a big reason Beaufort High had a tough time finishing around the rim in Bluffton’s key 63-56 win.
Also nominated: Dennis Holmes, RHHS; Jaeon Allen, BCHS; Shemar Williams, WB; Luke Foley, HHP; CJ Knight, JPII
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Ridgeland-Hardeeville Jaguars (3-0 last week, 14-6 overall)
We try to spread the love around as much as possible, but there’s no denying the Jaguars right now. After being a slam dunk pick for Team of the Week last week, and they were a 360 windmill jam this week. RHHS blew out Class 3A No. 3 Wade Hampton by 19 to start the week, then made quick work of Lake Marion and Estill over the weekend to run their winning streak to seven games.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Bluffton at Hilton Head High, 7:30 p.m. Friday
The Seahawks were a pleasant surprise the first time through the Region 7-4A rotation, going 2-1 and nearly knocking off Colleton County. Now they have to prove it wasn’t a fluke, starting with a tough Bobcat team that will be motivated to avenge a 58-52 home loss Jan. 14.
March 27-28 at Beaufort Academy!
