Each Monday throughout the high school wrestling season, we recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action.
We will select two Wrestlers of the Week — one in the lower weights (106-145) and one in the upper weights (152-285) — as well as a Team of the Week.
Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Wrestling Spotlight presented by Candor USA.
LOWER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Isham Peace, MRHS
The Sharks’ 113-pounder is our first repeat winner of the season after another outstanding week on the mat. The junior went 5-0 on the week and winning the 113-pound title and Lower Weights Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the Hanahan Hawk Invitational.
UPPER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Rod Grant, MRHS
The Sharks make it a sweep, as their 220-pound state championship contender takes top honors for the first time this season. Grant was 3-0 on the week and was named the Upper Weights Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Hanahan Hawk Invitational.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
May River Sharks
The Sharks take home the honors for a second straight week after another dominant week on the mat. May River trounced Hilton Head High 70-6 in a mid-week dual, then won the Hanahan Hawk Invitational on Saturday. The Sharks remain ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by SCMat.com.
MATCH OF THE WEEK
Coastal Clash at HHIHS, Friday and Saturday
If you need to get out of the house and get the blood pumping this weekend, Hilton Head High is the place to do it. The Seahawks are hosting the Coastal Clash on Friday and Saturday, with 14 teams from throughout South Carolina and Georgia hitting the mat. Five local teams — HHIHS, Battery Creek, Beaufort High, Bluffton, and May River — will square off with South Carolina powers Rock Hill and South Pointe, as well as formidable Georgia foes Camden County and Richmond Hill. Wrestling starts at 11:30 a.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the finals Saturday afternoon should be quite a show.
