HSFB: See who was named the Week 10 RBC Heritage Player of the Week

While Whale Branch star De’Arius Hazel is sidelined from football, maybe he should consider working in politics.

For the second straight week, Hazel whipped the votes and rallied to win the fan vote, collecting 19.81% of the vote to surge past Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Robert Hall (16.67%). Another impressive showing from the Seabrook bloc.

Perhaps Hazel garnered some sympathy vote, too. After all, he saw his sensational season end with a broken leg suffered in Friday’s win over Battery Creek, but not before he racked up 93 yards and two TDs on the ground and added four tackles (two for loss) on defense.

Hall was a beast, too, keeping the pressure on Hilton Head Prep quarterback Stone McDonald with five tackles, four sacks, and a pass breakup in a 48-19 win that clinched the region title.

The Seahawk coalition turned out strong, too, but Evan Elliot (13.36%) finished third, as he and Will Frith (9.75%) split the Seahawk Nation vote.

Also for the second straight week, though, one player did enough to impress the majority of the voting panel and render the fan vote as useless as my own vote, which went to Frith for his 222 rushing yards along with five tackles and five pass breakups. One vote also went to Beaufort High’s James Dagin, who rushed for 121 yards and two TDs in a region-clinching win over Colleton County.

But the other three votes were cast in favor of Hilton Head Christian Academy quarterback Hayden Shinn, who passed for 266 yards and five touchdowns and added 89 yards and a TD on the ground in the rivalry win over Hilton Head Prep for the Eagles’ ninth straight victory. That makes Shinn the RBC Heritage Player of the Week.

The truth is, like most weeks, we couldn’t have gone wrong with any of these outstanding nominees who came up big with a lot on the line.

Congrats to Hayden Shinn, De’Arius Hazel, and all the nominees, and thanks to everyone who voted!
