In a few hours, we’ll announce the winner of this week’s RBC Heritage Player of the Week award, but first we recognize the players whose dirty work helps establish the foundation for their teams’ success.
They are the big men fighting in the trenches, the defensive standouts, the two-way iron men, and the special teams contributors whose efforts often go unnoticed.
Not here.
We call them the Unsung Heroes presented by Candor USA, and here they are for Week 5:
Conrad Alford and Alfred Young, HHIHS — Alford and Alfred anchored the offensive line as the Seahawks rolled up over 550 total yards — and more than 330 on the ground — in a 41-0 win at Christ Church
Jace Blackshear, HHCA — Blackshear made big contributions on both sides of the ball in 43-22 win at Dorchester Academy catching four passes for 75 yards and a TD and collecting eight tackles
Malachai Doughterty, MRHS — Dougherty anchored the Sharks’ defense with 10 tackles, one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in a 49-0 win over Burke
Wyatt Haroutunian, HHP — Haroutunian had 10 tackles (six solo) in 34-26 win at John Paul II, his third consecutive game with double-digit tackles
De’Arius Hazel, WB — Hazel continues to be a two-way standout for the undefeated Warriors, as he rushed seven times for 83 yards and a TD and made seven tackles in a 36-9 win over Philip Simmons
Jeremiah Orr, RHHS — The Jaguars’ big man had five pancakes on offense and five tackles on defense in a 38-6 loss to Colleton County
Cody Parker, THA — Parker collected a team-high 15 tackles to help the Rebels blank Northwood Academy 36-0
Evan Slusne, JPII — Slusne registered eight tackles and two sacks to help the Golden Warriors stay in the game in a 34-26 loss to Hilton Head Prep
Eamon Smalls, BHS — The Eagles’ promising defensive lineman had six tackles, one for a loss, in a 56-21 loss to Blythewood
Jacob Union, BA — Newcomer anchored the Eagles’ defense with 12 tackles, four for loss, and two pass breakups in a 54-6 win over Northside Christian
