Hilton Head High standout Sam Gilman set a personal record and established a new state mark for a high school runner with his performance in the one-mile race Saturday at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tennessee.
In the penultimate meet of his impressive high school career, Gilman covered the mile in 4:06.40, finishing fifth in a strong field. Cole Sprout of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, won the race in 4:04.19.
Gilman has one meet remaining — the Brooks PR Invitational on June 15 in Seattle — before leaving for U.S. Air Force Academy basic training on June 26. He will run cross country and track for the Air Force Academy.
