HS Golf: Bunce, Seahawks Surge To State Title

Hilton Head High’s boys golf team saved two of its best rounds of the season for the biggest stage, as the Seahawks fired rounds of 304 and 303 on Monday and Tuesday at Port Royal Plantation’s Barony Course to claim the Class 4A state title.

The Seahawks placed fourth at last week’s Lower State qualifier, but a new week and a familiar course worked in their favor. After opening with a 304, Hilton Head was tied for second and three shots behind leader Myrtle Beach, but the Seahawks’ second-round score of 303 was the best of the day, and they surged to a three-shot win over A.C. Flora.

Derek Bunce led the way for the Seahawks, firing rounds of 70 and 71 to finish at 3-under-par 141 and claim individual medalist honors by a five-shot margin. Nolan Hawkins (152) tied for 13th for Hilton Head.

Beaufort High (632) finished eighth, led by Jerry Bruns, who tied for 20th. Bluffton (672) was 14th with Ricky Weathers tying for 13th overall.
