The votes are in, and Hilton Head High fans showed the same kind of dominance at the polls that the Seahawks have displayed on the field in the first two weeks of the season.
This week’s fan vote turned into a two-horse race, and even though Seahawk fans split the vote, two Hilton Head High teammates took it right to the wire. Cole DeMarzo won the fan vote by the narrowest of margins, garnering 23.67 percent of the vote to edge teammate Will Frith (22.47%). Thomas Heyward’s Trey Pusha (13.16%) and Ridgeland-Hardeeville’s Brandon Howard (11.17%) were the only other players who cracked double digits.
So that’s one vote for DeMarzo, who certainly was deserving with two touchdown receptions and an outstanding defensive effort in a 34-0 win over St. James, but alas, it was his only vote. Pusha also picked up one vote from our panel.
The winner was clear-cut, though, as three of our panelists (including myself) cast their ballots for the same player after a whale — or should I say a shark? — of an effort.
With 215 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries, Brandon Morales carried May River to a 35-21 win at Bluffton on Friday — the Sharks’ first win over their arch-rivals — and it earned him RBC Heritage Player of the Week honors for Week 2.
If you’re looking ahead to Friday, that means our first two winners will go head to head when Morales and May River host Whale Branch and Irvin Mulligan. Hmmm, that sounds like Game of the Week material. Should be fun.
