HSFB: RBC Heritage Player of the Week Nominees, Week 1

If Week 1 was any indication, there’s going to be some serious competition just to be nominated for the RBC Heritage High School Football Player of the Week award this season.

After poring over the nominations and stats, it was a challenge just to trim the list to the 10 most-deserving players, as a 100-yard rusher and a few players who scored multiple touchdowns failed to make the cut, not to mention all the defensive standouts who were overshadowed by eye-popping offensive numbers. (We’ll take care of them later.)

We’re operating on a short week thanks to lightning postponing Ridgeland-Hardeeville’s game until Monday, thus delaying the release of the nominees, so voting will close at noon Thursday. The ballot box is open, so vote in the poll below (after reading through the nominees’ credentials, of course) and share away!

The nominees are:

• James Dagin, BHS: Rushed seven times for 76 yards and 2 TDs and caught four passes for 54 yards and a TD in 35-21 win over A.C. Flora

• Zach Doe, JPII: Rushed 30 times for 229 yards and 2 TDs and had a 22-yard reception in 16-14 loss to Cardinal Newman

• Ahmad Green, MRHS: Rushed 18 times for 110 yards and was 9-for-16 passing for 151 yards and 3 TDs in 34-6 win over Memorial Day

• Lee Kirkland, BLHS: Went 21-for-37 for 216 yards and 3 TDs in 31-30 loss at Screven County

• Stone McDonald, HHP: Was 14-of-17 passing for 183 yards and 3 TDs and rushed seven times for 118 yards and a TD in 45-0 win over Northside Christian

• Gaston Moore, HHIHS: Went 10-for-18 for 185 yards and 3 TDs in 43-14 win over Savannah High

• Brandon Morales, MRHS: Rushed 18 times for 93 yards and a TD and caught a 49-yard TD pass in 34-6 win over Memorial Day

• Irvin Mulligan, WBECHS: Rushed 12 times for 232 yards and 2 TDs in 31-9 win over Battery Creek

• Trey Pusha, THA: Rushed six times for 72 yards and a TD, had 3 INTs, including one for a TD, and returned a punt for a TD in 33-21 win at HHCA

• Jeffrey Smyth, BHS: Went 11-for-20 for 252 yards and 2 TDs and rushed 11 times for 50 yards in 35-21 win over A.C. Flora

  1. This looks bias! I would go with Irvin based on these Stats and he is way behind a kid from May River who might not be in top 5 of this list. Who nominates? One kid had 3 Fu mbles not mentioned. One had inflated stats that are based upon run after catch. Saw 3 players on Beaufort defense that should have more mention than our offense because they determined who won our game.

    1. I solicit nominations and/or stats from the coaches and then narrow the list down to the top 10. Fans can vote online for their choice, and the winner of the fan vote will count as one vote. A committee of four sports journalists, including myself, will also vote, and the player with the most votes will win. (Tiebreaker is number of fan votes.) It’s all just for fun and to get recognition for some of the best performances from around the area. I recognize that these types of things tend to reward offensive skill players, so I also do an “Unsung Heroes” list of offensive linemen, defensive players, and special teams standouts who had big games.

    2. It’s all about the votes and who can solicit the most. Unfortunately, for what ever reason some of these players do not get the votes that they deserve. It’s who you know and who you can share it with. This weekly player of the week is for fun and to have some amazing players recognized for their hard work on the field. I am looking forward to reading the unsung heroes for this week though…..

  2. Definitely a popularity contest, but all for fun! As fans, the most helpful thing we can do is go under Contributions and make a donation to LowcoSports for giving all the schools unbiased coverage!
