The new-look Hilton Head High boys’ lacrosse team opened the season with an impressive performance in a 17-5 win at May River on Wednesday.
The Seahawks lost seven starters off last year’s Lower State finalist team, but they picked up right where they left off a year ago. Chaz Renaud and Will Frith scored four goals apiece, Whit Molloy added three, and Jake Rader dished out five assists to go with a goal of his own. Max Boyer had two goals and two assists, and Alek Lazinski scored twice for Hilton Head.
Jon Boan and Luke Boan scored two goals apiece and Seth Eaton added one for the Sharks.
Hilton Head goalkeeper Chris Valentino made 13 saves, and Colin Courtney tallied 11 groundballs and a goal of his own. Frith (7-of-10) and Hake Patrick (9-of-12) combined to go 16-for-22 on face-offs for the Seahawks.
“Tonight was a great way to start the year,” Seahawks coach Will Callegari said. “We saw a lot of positive things from a number of guys around the field. May River played a good game, and on several occasions got us way out of our comfort zone. We have some stuff we need to improve on, but overall I am pleased with the effort and intensity we played with.”
Both teams are back in action at noon Saturday, as the Seahawks (1-0) travel to Bluffton and the Sharks (1-1) play at Oceanside Collegiate.
