HS Wrestling: Dual Playoffs End Early For Area Teams

It was a tough day on the mats for area teams in the high school wrestling dual playoffs Saturday.

All five local teams that were in the postseason were eliminated on the first day of competition.

John Paul II went 0-2 at the SCISA state duals, losing 40-27 to Heathwood Hall and 60-42 to Ben Lippen to finish fifth.

In the Class 4A playoffs, Hilton Head High knocked off Myrtle Beach before losing 64-9 to fourth-ranked Chapin.

In Class 3A, May River defeated Bishop England in the first round before falling to Swansea, and Battery Creek lost 43-25 to Gilbert after a first-round bye.

In Class 2A, Whale Branch lost its opening match to Marion.

Individual wrestlers will continue their quests for state championships with JPII competing in the SCISA state tournament Saturday, and SCHSL teams competing in the Lower State tournaments Feb. 16-17.

Beaufort High will host the Class 4A Lower State tournament, May River will host the Class 3A Lower State meet, and Whale Branch will travel to Marion for the Class 2A-1A Lower State tournament. The top four individuals in each weight class will advance to the state tournament Feb. 23-24 at the Anderson Civic Center.
