No. 9 hitter Christasia Holmes hit a go-ahead three-run blast in the eighth inning, and birthday girl Bailey Cox had a homer and three RBIs on her sweet 16 as Colleton County softball escaped with a wild 19-11 win at May River on Monday to open Region 7-4A play.
The Cougars took their first lead in the fourth, when Shandi Brown worked a two-out walk after starting 0-2 and Cox followed with a two-run blast to center to make it 5-3. Colleton poured it on an inning later, tacking on five runs to seemingly take control, but the Sharks bounced right back with a four-run two-out rally in the bottom half with Casey Laing’s two-run single providing the spark.
Colleton tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with the aid of a two-out error, but the first six May River hitters in the bottom of the frame reached base — five with hits and one via walk — and Kailee Smith’s two-run single and Charlotte Berkley’s run-scoring hit capped a four-run outburst to force extra innings.
The Cougars stifled the momentum immediately in the eighth when Holmes blasted a three-run shot to left to set off an eight-run inning and take the series opener. Sydney Stivender gave a yeomanlike effort in the circle for Colleton, throwing 177 pitches in a complete game.
