HSBSB: Big first inning propels Dolphins past War Hawks

Hilton Head Prep baseball used a 10-run first inning to cruise to a home win Monday, downing Colleton Prep 15-2.

The Dolphin offense exploded in the opening frame, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first capped off by a Steele Burd two-run homer. The teams traded a run in the second inning before the War Hawks added another in the third to make it 11-2, but the Dolphins answered with a four-run fourth to extend the margin to 15-2.

Phoenix Betancourt finished strong in relief, allowing no hits in the top of the fifth to close out the victory.

Payce Gartner excelled in the leadoff spot for Hilton Head Prep, going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Burd was 2-for-2 with a two-run blast alongside two walks, and Gunnar Bonomo picked up a pair of hits.

Peyton Bullock earned the win on the mound, pitching the first three innings and allowing no earned runs while striking out five batters before Betancourt tossed two hitless frames in relief.

Hilton Head Prep (2-0, 1-0) travels to rival Hilton Head Christian Academy on Tuesday. Colleton Prep (0-1, 0-1) plays at Calhoun Academy on Friday.
